How to Get an Abortion - For Wisconsinites
-
Overview: As of September 2023, it is legal to provide abortions in the state of Wisconsin. For an update list of where to get an abortion, please visit:
While abortion provision is legal in Wisconsin, there are laws restricting abortion access in the state. Because of those laws, some people go to other states in the Midwest to have their abortion, particularly Illinois, Minnesota, and Michigan. Laws about abortion in Wisconsin and its bordering states are summarized here:
In Wisconsin
Abortion is legal through 22 weeks.
Minors must have parent or guardian consent to have an abortion.
There is a mandatory 24-hour waiting period and two required counseling visits.
In Illinois
Abortion is available in Illinois through viability.
In Minnesota
Abortion is available in Minnesota through viability.
In Michigan
Abortion is legal in Michigan through any gestational age (though individual providers have gestational age limits).
Minors must have parental consent to receive an abortion.

Overview: Abortions can be expensive, generally costing over $500 for a first-trimester abortion before any travel cost. To off-set that cost, many local and national abortion funds help people pay for their abortion care.
For a full list of abortion funds in the United States, please visit The National Network of Abortion Funds here: https://abortionfunds.org/funds/

If someone is interested in self-managing their abortion using abortion pills (either mifepristone & misoprostol or misoprostol only) they can read more about the process of self-managing an abortion at either of these resources:
SASS (Self-Managed Abortion, Safe & Supported)
If someone wants to order pills, they could do so through Aid Access.
Aid Access offers a consult with a physician, as well as the ability to order abortion pills even if someone is not currently pregnant, called advanced provision pills. AidAccess charges $110 for their services and offers a sliding scale for those that cannot pay that amount. It can take 2-3 weeks for the medications to arrive.
For other ideas on how to receive abortion pills in Wisconsin, visit this page from Plan C. Plan C notes that it is not legal for US-based pharmacies to send abortion medications to Wisconsin addresses. However, it is still possible for people to seek post-abortion care in Wisconsin.
WASN will provide support to people who are ending their pregnancy at home, including if they are self-managing their abortion. Reach out to get support from WASN.
