How to Get an Abortion - For Wisconsinites

  • Overview: As of June 2022, it is no longer legal to provide abortions in Wisconsin and all clinical abortion provision within the state has stopped. However, it is legal to seek an abortion outside of the state of Wisconsin. For an update list of where to get an abortion, please visit:

Note that the nearest states in which to get an abortion are Illinois, Minnesota, and potentially the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, depending on where you live in Wisconsin. You will need to comply with laws in these states, which we’re summarizing here:

    In Illinois

In 2019, Illinois passed a law that protects access to abortion care—abortion is legal for all people in Illinois before fetal viability (usually around 23 weeks since your last menstrual period).

In 2022, Illinois repealed laws restricting access to abortion for people under 18. People of all ages in Illinois can now get abortion care without legal restriction.

There are no laws in Illinois mandating waiting periods, multiple visits, counseling, or notification of parents/guardians for those under 18.

    In Minnesota

When you get an abortion in Minnesota, you will need to have an intake or counseling appointment with a physician (which can be done via telehealth from your home in Wisconsin), wait at least 24 hours, and then visit the clinic either for your procedural abortion or to take the first dose of your medication abortion. The counseling is state mandated and designed to change your mind about having an abortion. Abortion is legal in Minnesota until fetal viability unless your life or health is endangered.

If you are a minor, you will need to notify both of your parents of your abortion decision at least 48 hours prior to your abortion appointment (unless only one parent is living, one parent cannot be located, or a parent provides written authorization.) If you cannot or do not want to notify your parents, you may be able to use a process called judicial bypass. Staff at clinics are trained to assist in the judicial bypass process. For more details, review NARAL Pro-Choice’s explainer of Minnesota anti-abortion laws here.

    In Michigan

When you get an abortion in Michigan, you will need to have a counseling appointment, leave the clinic for at least 24 hours, and then return to the clinic either for your procedural abortion or to take the first dose of your medication abortion. The counseling is state mandated and designed to change your mind about having an abortion. Abortion is legal in Michigan until fetal viability.

If you are a minor, you need the written consent of one parent. If that is not possible, you may be able to use a process called judicial bypass. Staff at clinics are trained to assist in the judicial bypass process. For more details, review NARAL Pro-Choice’s explainer of Minnesota anti-abortion laws here.

  • If someone is interested in self-managing their abortion using abortion pills (either mifepristone & misoprostol or misoprostol only) they can read more about the process of self-managing an abortion at either of these resources:

If someone wants to order pills, they could do so through Aid Access.

Aid Access offers a consult with a physician, as well as the ability to order abortion pills even if someone is not currently pregnant, called advanced provision pills. AidAccess charges $110 for their services and offers a sliding scale for those that cannot pay that amount. It can take 2-3 weeks for the medications to arrive.

For other ideas on how to receive abortion pills in Wisconsin, visit this page from Plan C. Plan C notes that it is not legal for US-based pharmacies to send abortion medications to Wisconsin addresses. However, it is still possible for people to seek post-abortion care in Wisconsin.
